White Sox End Skids With Eleven Inning Win Over Orioles

White Sox 3, Orioles 2  (25-15)

The White Sox ended their three game winning streak with an eleven inning win over the Orioles.  Ron Hansen singled home Ken Berry in the bottom of the eleventh for the game winner.  Tommie Agee hit a solo homerun in the win and Don Buford went three for four.

Hoyt Wilhelm picked up the win and he improved to 2-0.  He threw 2 1/3 perfect innings and he struck out three.  Jim O’Toole had a nice start and he gave up just one unearned run in six innings.

Angels Lose Third Straight In Loss to Senators

It was a pretty tough month for the Angels and they finished it on a losing note.  They finished May 10-18 and they’re in dead last ten games back of first place Detroit.

Nick Wilhite had a rough start and he dropped to 0-2 on the season.  He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in just 2 2/3 innings.

Don Mincher was the hitting star in the win. He went three for four with a run and an RBI.  Buck Rodgers singled and he drove in two runs in the loss.

Tigers Held to Six Hits by Luis Tiant

Indians 9, Tigers 0  (26-15)

Luis Tiant complete shutdown the Tigers bats and Mickey Lolich had his second straight rough outing in a blow out loss to the Indians.  Tiant pitched a complete game shutout and struckout thirteen Tigers.

Mickey Lolich dropped to 5-5 and he gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in only three innings of work.  Larry Sherry was bombed for four runs and Pat Dobson was tagged for two.

The only Tiger who could figure out Tiant was Jim Northrup.  He had three of the Tigers’ six hits.

Red Sox Close Out May With Fourth Straight Win

Red Sox 3 (22-20), Twins 2 (20-22)

The Red Sox held off a late inning surge by the Twins to win their fourth straight game.  Bucky Brandon improved to 2-5 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up two unearned runs on four hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.  For the Twins, Jim Perry dropped to 0-3 on the season with a tough start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Carl Yastrzemski homered twice in a big day.  He brought his season homer total up to ten with both homers being solo shots.  For the Twins, Russ Nixon singled and he scored a run.

Twins Split Doubleheader With Yankees

Yankees 4, Twins 3  (19-21)

The Twins comeback fell just short as they lost the first game of their doubleheader with the Yankees.  Down 4-1, they scored two runs in the ninth but that’s all they’d get and they’d settle for a one run loss.

Dave Boswell took the loss and he dropped to 1-3 on the season.  He gave up four runs on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Rod Carew went three for four in the loss. Harmon Killebrew went yard for the tenth time this season with a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Twins 3, Yankees 0  (20-21)

Jim Merritt threw a two hit shutout in a very nice start as the Twins salvaged a split with the Yankees in their doubleheader.  He didn’t walk a single batter and he struck out eleven in the win.

Harmon Killebrew went three for four with a run and an RBI in the win.  Cesar Tovar was the only other Twin with more then one hit.  He went two for four.

Tigers Sweep Doubleheader Over White Sox

Tigers 4 (25-14), White Sox 2 (24-14)

The Tigers doubled up the White Sox in opener of a weekday double header.  The White Sox actually got on the board first with a run in the second but the Tigers came back and scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Earl Wilson picked up the win and improved to 7-3.  He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Fred Gladding pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and he picked up save number eight.  Gary Peters took the loss for the White Sox.  He dropped to 6-2 and he gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Jim Northrup homered for the Tigers and Al Kaline had two hits and a run to lead the way for the Tigers.  Ken Berry was the only White Sox with two hits and he scored a run.

Tigers 4 (26-14), White Sox 3 (24-15)

The Tigers swept their double header with the White Sox and won their third straight game.  This was a fun game because each time the White Sox scored, the Tigers matched them.  Each scored a run in the third and a run in the fifth.  The White Sox scored one run in the eighth and the Tigers finally broke the routine and scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame to put the game away.

Joe Sparma was knocked out of this one early.  He only gave up one run but he gave up two hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings.  Wickersham picked up the win and Fred Gladding saved his tenth game.  Tommy John last five innings for the White Sox but it was Howard who took the loss and who dropped to 1-3.

Don Wert went yard twice in this one and Willie Horton hit a solo shot in that two run eighth inning.  Don Buford was the big producer for the White Sox.  He went two for four with two runs.

Red Sox Sweep Doubleheader Over Angels

Red Sox 5 (20-20), Angels 4 (18-25)

Tom Horton doubled home Reggie Smith in the bottom of the eighth inning to win it for the Red Sox in the first game of their doubleheader with the Angels. The win was the Red Sox second in a row and once again they had pushed themselves back up to .500.

For the Red Sox, Jose Santiago was shelled and he lasted just three innings but the bullpen picked him up. Dan Osinski picked up the win with two shutout innings of relief and John Wyatt pitched a shutout ninth to pick up his fourth save.

Bill Kelso took the loss for the Angels as he gave up the eighth inning run. He tempted fate in all three of his inning with four walks but he was able to pitch himself out of the jams with six strikeouts. Jack Sanford had a mediocre start and he gave up three runs in five innings.

At the plate for the Sox, Mike Andrews doubled twice and he drove in one and scored a run. Jose Tartabull went two for five and he scored a run. For the Angels, Don Mincher went two for three with a two run homer (his tenth of the season) and Jimmie Hall also went yard with a two run shot.

Dennis Bennett pitched the Red Sox to their third straight win and a sweep in their doubleheader over the Angels.  He gave up just one run on five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in a complete game.  For the Angels, George Brunet dropped to 1-6 on the season with a poor start.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in just four innings.

Rico Petrocelli provided most of the offense in the win.  He went three for four with two runs and two RBIs.  For the Angels, Bobby Knoop went two for four and he drove in the lone run with a solo homerun.

Jim McGlothlin Shuts Out White Sox In Angels Win

Angels 5 (18-24), White Sox 0 (24-13)

Jim McGlothlin improved to 4-1 on the season with a six hit shutout.  The righthander walked one and he struck out six in an impressive start.  For the White Sox, John Buzhardt dropped to 2-3 with a rough start.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Jimmie Hall had a nice day at the plate for the Angels.  He went three for five with two RBIs.  For the White Sox, Tommie Agee was the only White Sox hitter with two hits in the game.

Twins Split Doubleheader With Athletics

Twins 4, Athletics 3  (19-19)

The Twins won their third straight game behind their current ace, Dean Chance’s, right arm.  He improved to 8-2 and he gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings.  Al Worthington held the A’s scoreless in the final 1 1/3 innings and he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Bob Allison was the hitting star in the win.  He went one for two with two walks, two RBIs and two runs.  His hit was a double and he also stole his third base of the season.

Athletics 7, Twins 2  (19-20)

The Twins couldn’t make it four games in a row and they settled for a split in their doubleheader with the A’s.  Jim Kaat took another loss and he dropped to 1-6 on the season.  He gave up three runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Bob Allison doubled and he scored both Twins runs.  Rich Rollins went three for four with an RBI.

Denny McLain Pitches Tigers to Win Over Senators

The Tigers won their rubber game and took the three game series they had at home against the Washington Senators.  Denny McLain was very solid and he evened his record to 5-5.  He gave up one run on seven hits and three walks with ten strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Fred Gladding got the final out of the game and he picked up save number 8.

Jim Northrup had a solid game at the plate.  He had three hits and drove in a run.  Don Wert singled twice and scored a run.

Red Sox End Skid Behind Solid Outing By Jim Lonborg

Red Sox 4, Orioles 3  (19-20)

The Red Sox avoided a sweep at the hands of the Orioles and ended a three game losing streak behind another nice start by Jim Lonborg.  He got into trouble early and gave up two runs in the first but he calmed down to collect his sixth run of the season.  In all, he gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  John Wyatt pitched the final 1 1/3 and he picked up his third save of the season.

Reggie Smith had a big day at the plate.  He went three for five with three runs.  Rico Petrocelli went two for four with a solo homerun and Mike Andrews had three hits in the game.

Joe Horlen Improves to 6-0 With Nice Start Over Angels

White Sox 3 (24-12), Angels 1 (17-24)

The White Sox got another nice start from Joe Horlen, who improved to 6-0 on the season.  He gave up one run on just three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in a complete game.  For the Angels, rookie Rickey Clark took the loss and he dropped to 2-4 on the season. He gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in eight innings.

Ron Hansen hit a two run homer for the White Sox.  For the Angels, Jim Fregosi had two of the Angels three hits and he drove in their only run with a solo homerun.

Mudcat Grant Pitches Twins to Win Over Athletics

Twins 4, Athletics 1  (18-19)

The Twins won their second straight game with another nice pitching performance.  Mudcat Grant improved to 4-5 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up one run on nine hits with a strikeout in six innings in the rain shortened game.

Bob Allison was the offense.  He drove in all four runs in the game.  He tripled home three in the first and then he singled home a run in the third.

Mickey Lolich Is Hit Hard in Tigers Loss

Senators 8, Tigers 1  (23-14)

The Senators turned the tables on the Tigers and blew them out in an 8-1 beatdown.  Mickey Lolich gave up five hits without getting a single batter out and all five of those baserunners came around to score.  It took three pitchers to get the Tigers through a six run first inning by the Senators.

Don Wert drove in the only run of the game for the Tigers.  Dick McAuliffe, Bill Freehan and Wert all had two hits in the game.

Bucky Brandon Is Shelled In Red Sox Third Straight Loss

Orioles 10, Red Sox 0  (18-20
)

This game was plain ugly.  Bucky Brandon was shelled for seven runs in four innings and five errors resulted in four unearned runs in the game.  The loss dropped Brandon to 1-5 on the season.

To make matters worse, the Sox hitters picked up ten hits but they couldn’t push a single runner across the plate.  Tom Horton and Mike Andrews led the way with two hits a piece.

White Sox Split Doubleheader With Angels

May 26, 1967 at Anaheim Stadium
Angels 7 (17-22), White Sox 2 (22-12)

Tommy John was hit hard as the White Sox lost the opener in a doubleheader with the Angels.  He gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.  The loss dropped his record to 3-3 on the season.

For the Angels, George Brunet didn’t make it out of the second inning but Pete Cimino was nearly perfect in 7 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win.  He gave up just one hits and two walks with seven strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 2-1 on the season.

Don Mincher got it done at the plate for the Angels.  He went two for three with a big three run homer.  Paul Schaal went three for five with a run and an RBI.  For the White Sox, Ken Berry hit a solo homerun and Jerry McNertney went one for three with an RBI.

White Sox 2 (23-12), Angels 1 (17-23)

The White Sox salvaged a split in their doubleheader with a nice outing by Jim O’Toole.  He gave up one unearned run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Hoyt Wilhelm got the final two batters out and he picked up his second save of the season.

A nice start by Nick Wilhite went to waste.  He gave up one run on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Minnie Rojas gave up the deciding run in the eighth inning and he took the loss.

There wasn’t a lot offense in this one.  The game winner came in the eight with Ron Hansen driving home Tommy McCraw on a sac. fly.  Rick Reichard had the most hits out of anyone on either team with three and he scored the lone Angels run.

Twins End Skid Behind Five Hit Shutout By Jim Merritt

The Twins finally figured out the A’s and in the process, they ended their three game losing streak.  Jim Merritt was the star with his five hit shutout.  He gave up just two walks and he struck out nine in the win and he improved to 2-0 on the season.

Zoilo Versalles went three for five with two runs in the win.  Harmon Killebrew continued his hot streak and he hit homerun number nine, a two run shot in the fifth inning.

Tigers Double Up Senators For Second Straight Win

The Tigers had their second big hitting day in a row.  Against the Senators, they racked up ten runs on fourteen hits.  Seven different Tigers drove in runs and seven scored runs.

Dick McAuliffe had three hits and four runs in the game.  Al Kaline, Willie Horton and Bill Freehan all drove in a pair.

Joe Sparma didn’t take the win because he gave up five early runs and was gone after three innings.  Wickerson threw five innings of shutout relief and he improved to 2-0.  Fred Gladding picked up his seventh save of the season.

Red Sox Drop Below .500 In Second Straight Loss

The Red Sox dipped below .500 again with their second straight loss on the road.  Rookie Billy Rohr was tagged for four runs in just three innings and he dropped to 2-2 on the season.  He’d make only one more start for the Red Sox before getting sent down to the minors.

Reggie Smith had a nice day at the plate in the loss. He went two for five with a run and an RBI.  Mike Andrews also hit the ball well and he went two for four with an RBI.

Twins Held to Two Runs In Third Straight Loss

Athletics 3, Twins 2  (16-19)

The Twins lost their third straight game overall and their fourth straight to the A’s as once against the Athletic’s pitching staff shut down the Twins.  Rod Carew drove in one of the runs with a solo homerun while Tony Oliva tripled and drove in a run in the loss.

A pretty good start by Dave Boswell went to waste.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks with nine strikeouts in eight innings.  The loss drops his record to 1-2 on the season.

Tigers Blow Out Red Sox In Series Finale to Avoid Sweep

The Tigers avoided a sweep at the hand of the Red Sox and snapped a three game losing streak with a nine run attack.  The big inning for the Tigers was the fifth, in which they scored six runs.

Jim Northrup definitely got it done for the Tigers.  He went two for three with a homerun and five RBIs.  Dick McAuliffe also homered and he scored three times in the game.

Reggie Smith drove in two of the three Red Sox’ runs and finished with two hits.  Mike Ryan hit a solo shot in the third inning and that was the extent of the Red Sox offense.

Earl Wilson went the distance and improved to 6-3.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts.  Jose Santiago took the loss for the Red Sox.  He gave up six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Tommy McCraw Hits Three Homers, Drives In Eight In White Sox Win Over Twins

White Sox 14 (22-11), Twins 1 (16-18)

The White Sox continued their impressive May with another series win and they did it in grand fashion today against the Twins.  Tommy McCraw had a career day at the plate in the blowout win.  He went three for six with three homeruns and eight RBIs.  Gary Peters also helped out his own cause by going three for five with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.

Peters improved to 6-1 with a really nice start that was lost in all the offense.  He gave up one run on six hits and seven walks with nine strikeouts in a complete game.

Dean Chance took the loss for the Twins in a rough start.  He gave up six runs on ten hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  The loss dropped him to 7-2 on the season.  The lone run for the Twins came on an RBI single by Bob Allison in the third inning.

Jim Lornborg Throws Four Hit Shutout Over Tigers In Red Sox’ Fourth Straight Win

Red Sox 1 (18-17), Tigers 0  (21-13)

A solo shot by Dalton Jones in the second was the only run of the game in this pitcher’s dual.  Jim Lornberg threw a gem.  He gave up four hits and four walks with eleven strikeouts in the complete game shutout.

Denny McLain was good but he would have had to be perfect in this one.  He gave up only the single run on three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in seven innings.  Jose Tartabull and Jones were the only two players for either team to rack up two hits.

Angels Win Back to Back Games For First Time In Over Two Weeks

It’s been a while, but the Angels have a winning streak.  Jack Sanford had a nice start in the Angels second straight win and he improved to 3-2 on the season.  He gave up one run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts in seven innings.  Minnie Rojas closed it and threw two shutout innings to pick up his third save of the season.

Jimmie Hall hit a two run homer in the win.  Jim Fregosi went two for three with a solo homerun and a walk.

White Sox Score Four in The Sixth To Top Twins

White Sox 5 (21-11), Twins 4 (16-17)

The White Sox put four runs on the board in the sixth inning to end their three game losing streak.  Three of those four runs came on a big three run homer by Ron Hansen.  Pete Ward also went yard in the game with a solo shot.

For the Twins, Harmon Killebrew hit a two run shot and that was his eighth homerun of the season.  Cesar Tovar went two for four with a homerun and two runs scored.

John Buzhard picked up the win for the White Sox with a decent start. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  The win improved his record to 2-2 on the season.  Hoyt Wilhelm threw 2 2/3 innings and he didn’t give up a hit to pick up his first save of the season.

Mudcat Grant took the loss for the Twins.  He gave up five runs (just one earned) on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. 

Red Sox Win Third Straight, Pushes Record to .500

Red Sox 5 (17-17), Tigers 2 (21-12)

Dennis Bennett got the better of Mickey Lolich in this pitching battle.  The game was tied 1-1 until the Red Sox got to Lolich with two runs in the fifth.  That lead would hold even after Tiger reliever George Korince gave up two more to the Red Sox in the top of the eighth.

Rico Petrocelli and Carl Yastrzemski both homered for the Red Sox.  Yaz’s homerun was a two run shot.  Al Kaline drove in each of the Tiger’s two runs.

Bennett picked up the win and improved to 2-1.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 7 1/3.  Lolich dropped to 5-3 and he struck out seven in seven innings.

Angels Halt Slide With Win Over Athletics

The Angels had lost their last three and nine of their last ten and there hoping that they finally put an end to the losing with a nice win over the Athletics.  Don Mincher had a big game and he went two for four with a homerun and three RBIs.  Tom Satriano also contributed with a double and two RBIs.

Jim McGlothlin had another nice start and he improved to 3-1 on the season.  He gave up three unearned runs one six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in a complete game.

Twins Edge White Sox 8-7

For the first time this season, the White Sox lost three games in a row and this time it was in a high scoring game against the Twins.  Jim Kaat was roughed up in his start but the pen did a fair job and the hitters picked him up.  Ron Kline picked up the win with an inning of shutout relief and Al Worthington gave up one unearned run in three innings to pick up his fifth save.

Joe Horlen was also shelled in his start but he wasn’t subjec to a decision either.  That honor went to Bob Locker, who gave up two runs on four hits and one walk and he got just one batter out.  The loss drops him to 1-1 on the season.

Cesar Tovar went two for three with two RBIs and a run for the Twins.  Rod Carew singled and scored twice.  For the White Sox, Tommie Agee went two for four with two RBIs and a run while Ken Berry went two for three with a solo homerun and three runs.

Jim O’Toole Is Hit Hard In Sox Loss

The first time in almost a month, the White Sox dropped two straight games.  And it was their first series loss in a month as well.  Jim O’Toole gave up four early runs that the White Sox never could recover from.  He gave up the four runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings and the loss drops him to 1-1 on the season.

Duane Josephson went three for four in the loss.  Wayne Causey doubled, scored a run and drove in one.

Tigers Split Doubleheader With Yankees

The Tigers made it four straight wins with some high powered offense against the Yankees.  Dick McAullife led the way on offense.  He went three for five with two homeruns, two RBIs and three runs.  Bill Freehan and Willie Horton also went deep for the Tigers.

Earl Wilson bounced back from a tough outing earlier in the week and last 6 1/3 innings.  He improved to 5-3 and he gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Fred Gladding picked up save number six when he pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball.

The Tigers four game winning streak came to an end and they failed to sweep the Yankees in their four game series.  The Yankees jumped out to a 5-3 lead with five runs in the third but the Tigers tied it in the fifth only to lose it in the eighth.

Willie Horton had a big game for the Tigers.  He went two for three with a homerun, three RBIs and a run. Al Kaline also went deep and Wert had two hits and two runs.

Joe Sparma was bounced in that five run second inning but because the Tigers tied it, he didn’t take a loss.  That went to Tiger reliever Larry Sherry who yielded the game winner in the eighth inning.
