Angels Top Tigers in Ninth Inning

Angels 3 (66-65), Tigers 2 (74-59)

The Angels avoided a four game sweep at the hands of the Tigers and it wasn’t until a dramatic ninth inning until they did so.  The Tigers tagged Angels starter McGlothlin for two runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead and that score stood when the Angels entered the bottom of the ninth.  Through eight innings, Earl Wilson had given up only one run on three hits.

Jim Fregosi led off the ninth with a ground out but Wilson lost Hall to a walk.  Then Morton came up huge with an RBI double to tie up the game.  Bubba Morton ended up moving over to third on an error by Al Kaline.  Fred Lasher replaced Wilson, who got Moose Skowron to ground out but the play at the plate was late and the Angels walked away with the win.

Wilson dropped to 18-10 on the season.  Angels reliever Bill Kelso walked away with his fifth win.

Tigers Move To Within Half Game of First Place With Doubleheader Sweep Over Angels

Tigers 4 (73-58), Angels 2 (65-64)

The Tigers doubled up the Angels in the first game of a weekday double header.  Denny McLain continued to pitch well and he gave up only three hits the entire game.  He did give up two runs but one was unearned and he struck out five.

George Brunet took the loss for the Angels.  He gave up three runs but he his control was way off.  He walked six in only 3 2/3 innings.

Dick McAuliffe hit homerun number 22 and he drove in two runs.  Al Kaline walked three times and scored tiwce while Bill Freehan singled twice and drove in a run.

Rick Reichardt, Buck Rodgers and Roger Repoz were the only Angels to get hits.  Reichardt doubled home a run and Rodgers drove in a run on a sac. fly.

Tigers 2 (74-58), Angels 1 (65-65)

The Tigers won their third straight and finished a sweep of their doubleheader over the Angels.  John Hiller continued to pitch well and he gave up only one run on eight hits in eight innings to improve to 4-0.  Fred Lasher pitched a perfect ninth and he picked up third save of the season.

Rickey Clark threw a solid game for the Angels but he dropped to 9-10.  He gave up only one run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in eight innings.

Bill Freehan homered for the Tigers to start the scoring for each team.  Woodie Held and Bubba Morton had two hits each for the Angels.

Mickey Lolich Throws Five Hit Shutout In Tigers Win Over Angels

The Tigers turned on the offense as they blew out the Angels in a west coast series opener.  Lenny Green had a big day with the bat.  He went three for five with four RBIs and two runs.  Bill Freehan had three hits and three RBIs while Jim Northrup touched home plate three times.

Lost in the offensive onslaught was a five hit shutout by Mickey Lolich.  He improved to 8-12 and he gave up two walks with six strikeouts.

Jack Hamilton took the loss for the Angels.  He gave up four runs and was pulled in the second inning.  The next three relievers all gave up runs as well.  Jim Fregosi and Bubba Morton each had two hits against Lolich.

Don Mincher Powers Angels to Win Over Orioles

The Angels scored in just one inning but it was a big five run sixth.  Don Mincher had the big hit with a three run homer, his 20th of the season.  Jimmie Hall singled, drove in two and scored on the Mincher homerun.

Jim McGlothlin picked up the win and he improved to 11-5.  He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings of work.  Minnie Rojas threw three shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his 23rd save of the season.

Angels Lose Pitchers Duel In Finale To Indians

Rickey Clark was on the short end of a pitcher’s duel as the Angels dropped further from contention in the American League.  He fell to 9-9 and he gave up one run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings of work.

Hawk Taylor was the only Angels hitter with two hits.  Johnny Werhas drove in the only run for the Angels with a sac. fly in the ninth inning.

Angels Put Sixteen Runs On The Board In Win Over Indians

Angels 16 (64-61), Indians 5

The Angels had their best offensive game of the season as they scored 16 runs and put 25 hits on the board in a blowout win over the Indians.  While just about everyone was a hitting star, Rick Reichardt was a notch above the rest as he went three for six with a homerun, five RBIs and two runs.  Hawk Taylor also had a great game and he went four for six with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs while Jim Fregosi was a perfect four for four and he scored four runs.

Jack Hamilton was the primary beneficiary of all of those runs.  He gave up five runs on ten hits and three walks with five strikeouts in eight innings.  The win pushed his record to 7-3 on the season.

George Brunet Loses 16th Game In Another Angels Loss

The Angels winning ways were rather short as they got right back to losing, although a decent start by George Brunet went to waste.  He fell to 11-16 and he gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts and he gave up the game winner with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Tom Satriano went two for three with a solo homerun.  Jim Fregosi went three for three with two doubles and an RBI.

Angels End Skid With Win Over Indians

The Angels finally ended their seven game skid with a win in their opener over the Indians.  And after pulling close to the American League lead, they now found themselves six games back and in fifth place.  Tom Satriano had a nice day at the plate and he went two for three with two runs.  Bobby Knoop went three for four with a double, a run and an RBI.

Jim Coates picked up his first win of the season with 1 2/3 innings of relief.  Bill Kelso picked up his tenth save with five solid innings of relief.  He gave up just one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Red Sox Extend Winning Streak to Four Games With Doubleheader Sweep Over Angels

Red Sox 12 (65-54), Angels 2  (62-59)

The Red Sox and Angels continued to go in opposite directions as the Angels lost their sixth straight game while the Red Sox won their third.  George Bruent took the brunt of the damage in the blowout loss and he fell to 11-15 when he gave up five runs in just two innings of work.  Lee Stange struck out ten and he gave up two runs in a complete game as he improved to 8-8.

Reggie Smith brought the big stick and he homered twice and drove in five.  Rico Petrocelli and Carl Yastrzemski also went yard and for Yaz, it was his 30th of the season.  For the Angels, Tom Satriano went two for three and he drew a walk to be the only Angels hitter to reach base three times.

Red Sox 9 (66-54), Angels 8 (62-60)

The Red Sox overcame an eight run deficit in a dramatic come from behind win to finish both a series and doubleheader sweep over the Angels.  For the Red Sox it was their fourth straight win and it was at the expense of the Angels eighth straight loss.

Things looked grim as the Angels jumped out to an eight run lead only to see the Red Sox chip away at it and finally tie it in the sixth inning.  Then in the eighth, Jerry Adair belted a solo homerun to give the Red Sox their winning run.  Carl Yastrzemski had a big three run homer while Dalton Jones had two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

For the Angels, Don Mincher brought the big stick.  He went three for four with his nineteenth homerun, two RBIs and two runs.  Roger Repoz went two for three with two walks, a double, a run and an RBI.

Minnie Rojas took the loss for the Angels when he gave up two runs in his three innings of relief.  Jose Santiago improved to 7-4 with two innings of shutout relief.

Red Sox Edge Angels In High Scoring Game

Red Sox 12 (64-54), Angels 11 (62-58)

The Angels continued their slide as they dropped their fifth straight game in a crazy one with the Red Sox.  Pitching went out the window as the two teams combined for 23 runs on 29 hits and the Red Sox held off a ninth inning rally by the Angels to win it by a single run.

Carl Yastrzemski was one of the hitting stars for the Red Sox in the win.  He went four for five with his 29th homerun, two RBIs and four runs.  George Scott also went yard and he finished the game three for five with two runs and two RBIs.  Four different Angels homered with Rick Reichardt going two for four with his twelth homerun, three RBIs and a run in the loss.  Jimmie Hall went two for three with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.

Dan Osinski picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.  Jim Coates took the loss for the Angels although he was hardly the worst pitcher going for the Red Sox.

Red Sox Edge Angels, Tony Conigliario Carried Off Field

Gary Bell outdueled Jack Hamilton as the Red Sox took the opener in the series between the two teams.  Bell improved to 8-10 and he gave up two runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts in the complete game win.  Jack Hamilton took the loss for the Angels and he fell to 6-3.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings of work.

Rico Petrocelli tripled, drew a walk, drove in a run and scored twice to lead the way for the Red Sox.  For the Angels, Jimmie Hall was the hitting star with a pair of solo homers. 

The big blow to the Red Sox didn’t show up on the scoreboard though.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hamilton hit Tony Conigliario in the face and the slugger had to be carried off the field.  He’d miss the rest of the 1967 season and all of 1968 because of injury.

Dean Chance Wins Sixteenth Game In Twins Seventh Straight Win

Twins 5 (65-50), Angels 1 (62-56)

Dean Chance improved to 16-8 as the Twins finished up a sweep over the Angels and won their seventh straight game.  It was unfortunate for the Angels because they actually outhit the Twins 9-6, they just couldn’t push those runners across the plate.  Chance gave up one run on nine hits and four walks with ten strikeouts in the complete game win while Jim McGlothlin fell to 10-5 with a very rough start.  He gave up five runs and he left with just two outs in the first inning.

Tony Oliva went two for four with a run and an RBI.  Ted Uhlaender singled, doubled and drove in two while for the Angels, Jim Fregosi singled twice and drove in the lone Angels run.

Twins Win Sixth Straight Behind Shutout By Jim Perry

The Twins won their sixth straight game at the expense of the Angels and it was behind a very nice start by Jim Perry.  He gave up six hits and three walks with ten strikeouts in the complete game shutout and the win pushed his record to 5-5.  Curt Simmons took the loss for the Angels.  He gave up four runs on six hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings and the loss dropped him to 1-1.

Tony Oliva was the hitting star for the Twins.  He went three for four with a run and an RBI.  Cesar Tovar singled twice and scored two runs while for the Angels, no hitter had more then one hit.

Twins Edge Angels For Fourth Straight Win

Twins started Dave Boswell outdueled Angels starter George Brunet as the Twins held on to their thin lead in the American League Boswell improved to 10-8 and he gave up one run on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. Al Worthington got the final out for the Angels and he picked up save number 14. For the Angels, George Brunet gave up two unearned runs on seven hits and four walks with six strikeouts in a complete game loss.

Roger Repoz drove in the only Angels run with a solo homerun. Ted Uhlaender was the hitting star for the Twins. He went two for four with an RBI.

Angels Finish Sweep Over Red Sox With Third Straight One Run Win

The Angels moved themselves ahead of the Red Sox in the American League standings as the finished a three game sweep over Boston.  Rickey Clark improved to 9-8 with 7 2/3 shutout innings and Bill Kelso got the final out of the game to pick up his ninth save of the season.  Jim Lonborg took the loss and he fell to 16-6.  He gave up three runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in just four innings.

Jose Cardenal and Roger Repoz belted solo homeruns for the Angels in the win.  Rico Petrocelli drove in both Red Sox runs with his twelth homer of the year.

Angels Win Second Straight Pitchers Duel Over Red Sox

The Angels tied the Red Sox in the standings with their second straight win in another pitcher’s duel.  This time it was Jack Hamilton who got it done on the mound for the Angels.  He gave up one run on six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings.  Minnie Rojas threw three shutout frames to close the game out and he earned save number 21.  For the Red Sox, Gary Bell took the loss despite a decent start.  He gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Don Mincher belted a solo homerun for the Angels.  Jim Fregosi went two for four and he drove in the other run for the Angels.  Joe Foy led the way for the Red Sox with two singles and he drove in the only run.

Jim McGlothlin Throws Three Hit Shutout Over Red Sox

Jim McGlothlin held the Red Sox to just three hits in a pitchers duel with Red Sox starter Lee Stange.  McGlothlin walked one and struck out four in the shutout win while Stange gave up just the one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Jimmie Hall scored the only run of the game for either side.  In the fourth inning, he singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  Mike Andrews had two of the three hits in the game for the Red Sox.

Curt Simmons Throws Ten Hit Shutout In Angels Debut

Just days after purchasing him from the Chicago Cubs, Curt Simmons paid the Angels some dividends by going out and throwing a ten hit shutout in their series finale with the Yankees.  He walked two and struck out one in the win.

Jose Cardnal led the way at the plate in a pretty balanced offensive attack by the Angels. Six different hitters had two hits and Cardenal went two for four with three RBIs and a run.

Angels Outhit Yankees 10-5, Still Lose

The Angels got their share of hits, they just couldn’t push anyone over the plate as five different Angels had two hits a piece.  Buck Rodgers had the only extra base hit of the game for either side with a triple but even he couldn’t score after he was gunned down at the plate on a ground ball to the shortstop.

George Brunet took the loss and he fell to 11-13.  He gave up the one first inning run on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.

Jim Fregosi Helps Hit Angels to Win Over Yankees

The Angels doubled up the Yankees in their series opener and ended their two game mini-skid.  Jim Fregosi was one of the hitting stars and he went three for four with three RBIs and a run.  Bubba Morton went three for four with two RBIs.  Seven of the Angels eight runs came in the eighth inning.

Jack Hamilton threw five shutout innings in the Angels win but didn’t get a decision.  Minnie Rojas was shelled for four runs in three innings of relief but he picked up the win and he improved to 9-7.  Bill Kelso threw a shutout ninth and he picked up save number eight.

Angels Outhit Senators In Loss

The Angels outhit the Senators 8-6 but that didn’t mean squat because the scoreboard read 7-2.  Jim McGlothlin fell to 9-4 with the loss.  He gave up four runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in four innings.  Bill Kelso was also hit hard and he gave up three runs in his two innings of relief.

Bobby Knoop belted a solo homerun, hit eighth of the season.  Jose Cardenal tripled and he scored a run.

Rickey Clark, Fred Newman Are Hit Hard In Angels Loss

Senators 9, Angels 1  (57-51)

The Senators pummelled both Rickey Clark and Fred Newman in an Angels blowout loss.  Clark fell to 8-8 and he took the loss.  He gave up four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings.  Fred Newman also gave up four runs but his were in just 1 2/3 innings.

Bill Skowron was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for three with a triple, a walk and he scored the only Angels run of the game.

Woodie Held Drives In Three In Senators Win

The Angels scored four runs in the third inning and while the Senators made a game of it by coming within a run of tying the game up, that’s as close as they got.  Woodie Held doubled and drove in three runs while Don Mincher went three for three with a homerun and two runs scored.

George Brunet improved to 11-2 with the win.  He gave up four runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Minnie Rojas threw two shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his 20th save of the season.

Angels Edge Yankees Behind Solid Hitting By Jose Cardenal

The Angels got just enough in a win over the Yankees and it was Jose Cardenal who led the way at the plate for the Angels.  He went two for five with two RBIs and a run.  Woodie Held went two for three with two walks and an RBI.

Minnie Rojas improved to 8-7 on the season with a 1 2/3 innings of relief.  He gave up one hit and a walk.  Bill Kelso picked up his seventh save of the season with a shutout ninth.

Angels Held to Single Run In Loss to Yankees

The Angels got right back to losing after their day off and it was the hitters who once again couldn’t get it done.  Jim Fregosi picked up two of the Angels six hits and he drove in the only run of the game. 

Jim McGlothlin fell to 9-3 on the season with the loss.  He gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
