Angels Split Doubleheader With Senators

Senators 11, Angels 1  (54-49)

The Angels dropped their fifth straight in an embarrasing loss to the Senators in the first game of a doubleheader.  Rickey Clark took the loss and he fell to 8-7 on the season.  He gave up five runs (just one earned) on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in four innings of work.  Jim Coates was shelled for six runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Woodie Held went two for four with an RBI.  Rick Reichardt went two for three with a walk.

Angels 10, Senators 2  (55-49)

The Angels snapped their five game losing streak with a big win and they salvaged a split of their doubleheader.  Jim Fregosi led the way at the plate and he went two for five with a triple, three RBIs and a run.  Bill Skowron had a pinch hit single to drive in two runs and he scored once.

George Brunet improved to 10-12 on the season.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Bill Kelso closed out the game with three shutout innings and he picked up his sixth save of the season.

Angels Drop Fourth Straight Game

Senators 3, Angels 2  (54-48)

The Angels lost their fourth straight game as, like most of the season, their offense couldn’t produce enough runs.  Jimmie Hall belted a pinch hit solo homerun and Rick Reichardt went one for two with a run and a walk.

Minnie Rojas gave up the losing run in the seventh inning.  He gave up just the one run but it was the one that mattered and he fell to 7-7 on the season.

Angels Drop Third Straight Game in Loss to Senators

The Angels lost their third straight game behind a rough outing by Jack Hamilton.   He fell to 5-2 and he gave up three runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings of work.

Jim Fregosi doubled, drove in a run and scored.  Roger Repoz singled and he scored the other run.

Red Sox Top Angels In Ten Innings

Red Sox 6 (54-41), Angels 5 (54-46)

Reggie Smith scored on an error in the bottom of the tenth as the Red Sox took care of the red hot Angels.  The Red Sox were also helped out by four homeruns.  Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Coniligario and George Scott all hit solo homeruns while Joe Foy belted a two run homer.  Tony C.’s and Foy’s homers both came in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game up and send the game into extra frames.

For the Angels, Don Mincher was the hitting star.  He went two for five with his sixteenth homerun and three RBIs.  Jimmie Hall had a nice game as well with two singles.

Sparky Lyle picked up the win for the Red Sox with a shutout tenth inning.  Bill Kelso took the loss for the Angels and he fell to 4-3 on the season.

Red Sox End Angels Winning Streak

The Red Sox ended the Angels seven game hitting streak behind a couple of homeruns and a three RBI game by Carl Yastrzemski.  Tony Conigliario and George Scott both went yard for the Red Sox and both drove in two runs and scored two runs a piece.

Three homers weren’t enough for the Angels.  Jose Cardenal, Woodie Held and Bobby Knoop all went yard for the Angels.  Cardenal finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Bill Landis picked up the win for the Red Sox.  He threw a shutout seventh inning and the win pushed his record to 1-0.  Minnie Rojas took the loss and he gave up six runs (just two earned) in a big seventh inning Red Sox inning.

Angels Win Seventh Straight Game, Ends Red Sox Ten Game Winning Streak

The Angels won their seventh straight, and in the process, ended the Red Sox impressive ten game winning streak.  Fred Newman was the pitching star for the Angels.  He gave up just four hits in four shutout innings and the win pushed his record to 1-0 on the season.  Gary Waslewski took the loss in a tough start and he fell to 2-1 on the season.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.

Jimmie Hall went three for five with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs to lead the way for the Angels.  Don Mincher went two for five with a double, an RBI and two runs.  For the Red Sox, Mike Andrews was the hitting star.  He went two for five with a double and two runs.

Angels Hand Twins Sixth Straight Loss

Jack Hamilton outdueled Dean Chance as the Angels won their sixth straight game and in the process, the Twins dropped their sixth straight.  Hamilton improved to 5-1 and he gave up one run on two hits and five walks with four strikeouts in six innings of work.  Chance fell to 11-8 and he gave up two unearned runs on four its and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings.

Jose Cardenal had a hand in both Angels runs.  He went one for four with a run and an RBI.  Roger Repoz went two for four.  Zoile Versalles went one for three and he drove in the only Twins run.

Angels Continue Ascent With Fifth Straight Loss

The Angels and the Twins have gone in different directions the last five games.  The Angels won their fifth straight and the Twins have dropped their last five and for the second straight game, the Angels outdueled the Twins 2-1.  Jim McGlothlin got it done for the Angels and he gave up one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in eight innings while Bill Kelso threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the season.  Jim Merritt took the loss for the Twins and he fell to 6-3 despite a solid start.  He gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.

Johnny Werhas went two for four with an RBI to lead the way for the Angels.  For the Twins, Cesar Tovar went three for four with an RBI.  The three hits by Tovar were impressive because the team had just six hits.

Twins Drop Fourth Straight In Pitcher’s Duel Against Angels

The Angels won their fourth straight game and in the process, handed the Twins their fourth straight loss as the Angels continued their nearly miraculous come back from being in last place in the American League.  They got an impressive outing from George Brunet, who was just a little bit better then Dave Boswell.  Brunet, who seemed a lock to lose 20 games, won for the sixth time in seven decisions and he improved to 9-12.  He gave up one run on seven hits in three walks with six strikeouts and he came an out short of pitching a complete game.  Boswell fell to 8-6 and he gave up six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.

Bobby Knoop went two for three with a double and an RBI to lead the way for the Angels.  Harmon Killebrew was the only Twin with two hits and he drove in the only run with a solo homerun in the ninth inning.  It was his 28th homerun of the season.

Jack Hamilton Pitches Angels to Win Over White Sox

The Angels handed the White Sox their third straight loss and in the process, picked up another game in the American League.  Jack Hamilton picked up the win and he gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings.  Minnie Rojas threw 2 2/3 perfect innings and he picked up his 17th save of the season.  Joe Horlen took the loss for the White Sox and he gave up three runs in four innings.

For the Angels, Jimmie Hall went two for three with a homerun and two runs while Bobby Knoop went three for three with a solo homerun.  For the Sox, Pete Ward went two for four with an RBI.

Angels Double Up White Sox

The Angels put four runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back as they beat the first place White Sox. Jim Fregosi singled twice and he scored two runs while Bobby Knoop singled and drove in two runs. Wayne Causey singled twice and he scored two runs for the White Sox.

Rookie Rickey Clark improved to 8-6 with a nice start. He gave up two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Bill Kelso gave up one run in 3 1/3 innings and he picked up his fourth save of the season. For the White Sox, Gary Peters took the loss. He gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

George Brunet Throws Four Hit Shutout In Angels Win Over Twins

The Angels picked up one game on the Twins after the doubleheader sweep yesterday behind a great outing by George Brunet.  He gave up just four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in the complete game shutout.  The win pushed his Brunet’s record to 8-12 on the season.  Jim Merritt took the loss for the Twins.  He gave up two runs on ten hits with nine strikeouts in eight innings and the loss dropped his record to 6-2 on the season.

Jim Fregosi and Buck Rodgers were the hitting stars for the Angels.  They both finished with two hits and an RBI a piece.  For the Twins, Harmon Killebrew was the only hitter to reach base more then once.  He singled and drew two walks.

Twins Sweep Doubleheader Over Angels

Two of the hottest teams in the league squared off in a doubleheader and the Twins came out in front in the first game behind an excellent start by Dave Boswell.  He gave up one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts and the complete game improved his record to 8-5 on the season.  For the Angels, Bill Kelso took the loss and he dropped to 4-2.  He gave up four runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Bob Allison was the hitting start for the Twins despite getting just one at bat.  He belted a pinch hit three run homer in the seventh inning to help with the win.  Zoilo Versalles doubled and scored a run in a game in which the Twins managed just five hits.  For the Angels, Don Mincher went two for four and Jim Fregosi singled and scored the only run.

The Twins handed the Angels back to back losses for the first time in almost a month as they finished a sweep of their doubleheader.  The Twins went down 6-0 early but fought back inning by inning.  Bob Allison tied the game up with a two run homer in the seventh and then Rich Rollins belted a solo homerun to win it for the Twins in the ninth.

The big bat for the Angels was Jim Fregosi.  He went two for five and he played a part in four of the Angels six runs with three RBIs and a run.  Jose Cardenal went three for four with a run and an RBI.

A rough start by Mud Cat Grant turned into a no decision when the hitters picked him up.  Al Worthington closed out the game with two shutout innings and he picked up the win.  Rookie Ken Turner gave up the solo homerun in the ninth and he took the loss.

Jack Hamilton Holds White Sox to Five Hits In Angels Win

The Angels run continued behind a nice start by Jack Hamilton.  The right hander improved to 3-1 and he gave up one run on five hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Minnie Rojas got the final batter out and he picked up his sixteenth save of the season. For the White Sox, Bruce Howard dropped to 3-7 on the season.  He gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Jimmie Hall was the hitting star for the Angels.  He went two for two with two RBIs, two walks and a run.  For the White Sox, Walt Williams went two for five.

Rickey Clark outdueled Tommy John in the first game of a doubleheader between the White Sox and Angels.  Clark improved to 7-6 on the season and he gave up two runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout in six innings of work.  Minnie Rojas threw three shutout innings to close the game out and he picked up his fifteenth save of the season.  Tommy John took the loss and he fell to 8-7 on the season.  He gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Bobby Knoop was the hitting star for the Angels and he played a hand in two of their three runs.  He went two for three with a double, a walk, one run and an RBI.  For the White Sox, Pete Ward went two for three with a run.

Joe Horlen did a number on the Angels and he helped the White Sox salvage a split in their double header with the Angels.  He gave up just six hits and two walks with one strikeout in the complete game shutout.  Clyde Wright was bombed for the Angels and he was pulled before he could even get an out in the second inning.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and the loss dropped him to 3-3 on the season.

Jim Fregosi went two for two with a walk for the Angels but with the shutout, there weren’t many offensive highlights for the Angels.  Pete Ward and J.C. Martin both homered for the White Sox and Martin had three hits and two runs in the game.

The White Sox duo of pitchers outdueled the Angels duo in a 1-0 pitchers duel.  Gary Peters three seven shutout innings and Hoyt Wilhelm two as they combined for the shutout for the Sox.  George Brunet gave up just one run in seven innings and he fell to 7-12 on the season for his efforts.

The lone run came in the sixth inning.  Ken Berry doubled home Gary Peters with two outs and that was all either team would score.

Angels Win Sixth Straight Heading Into All Star Break

The Angels continued their improbable run with their sixth straight game as the season headed into the All Star break.  George Brunet improved to 7-11 with a nice start. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Minnie Rojas got the final batter out and he picked up his 14th save of the season.

Don Mincher provided most of the offense with a two run homer.  Jim Fregosi doubled and he scored a run.

Don Mincher Drives In Three Runs In Angels Fifth Straight Win

The Angels came from behind against the Athletics to win their fifth straight game.  Rickey Clark was pulled in the third inning when he gave up three runs but the Clyde Wright out of the pen and the hitters picked him up.  Wright threw 6 1/3 shutout innings and he gave up just one hit with four strikeouts.

Don Mincher tripled, drove in three and scored a run.  Jimmie Hall went two for four with a two run homer.

Angels Extend Winning Streak to Four Games With Doubleheader Sweep Over Athletics

Jim McGlothlin gave the Angels nine quality innings in a game in which he improved to 8-2 on the season.  He gave up just two runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Rick Reichardt had a big day at the plate. He went three for four with two homeruns, three RBIs and two runs.  Don Mincher hit a three run blast and Bob Schaal went yard with nobody on base.

The Angels won their fourth straight as they finished up a sweep of their doubleheader over the Athletics.  Jack Hamilton threw five decent innings and he improved to 2-1 on the season.  He gave up two runs on three hits and four walks with one strikeout in five innings.  Bill Kelson threw 3 2/3 shutout innings to close the game out and he picked up save number three.

Roger Repoz was the hitting star in this one.  He went three for four with two doubles, two run and two RBIs.

Angels, Red Sox Both Rally In Ninth Inning

The last time the Angels had a winning record was back when they were 7-6 on April 25.  After being as many as twelve games below .500, the Angels have now fought their way out of the cellar and are now contending in the American League.  And the game played out in an interesting way.  George Brunet gave up two runs in the ninth to blow a 2-1 lead but then Don Mincher bailed him out with a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Angels the win.

Jose Santiago took the loss and it wasted a nice start by Jim Lonborg.  Santiago fell to 4-4 on the season and Brunet picked up the win and he improved to 6-11.

All four Angels runs were scored via the long ball.  Mincher had the two run homer in the ninth and then Roger Repoz and Bob Schaal each hit solo homeruns.  For the Red Sox, George Thomas hit a two run homer and Joe Foy belted a solo shot for to account for the three Red Sox runs.

Red Sox Comeback Falls Short In Loss to Angels

The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning but they couldn’t get the tying run across as they lost to the Angels 4-3.  Gary Bell took the loss for the Red Sox with a mediocre start.  He dropped to 6-7 and he gave up four runs on five hits and five walks with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.  Rickey Clark picked up the win for the Angels with 6 2/3 solid innings.  He improved to 6-6 and he gave up one run on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts while Minnie Rojas picked up his thirteenth save despite giving up the two ninth inning runs.

Tom Satriano was the hitting star for the Angels.  He went two for three and he drove in two of the Angels four runs.  Jimmie Hall went two for three with a run.  For the Red Sox, Mike Andrews went two for four with a double, a run and an RBI.

Red Sox Wins Fourth Straight Game With Three Homeruns

The Red Sox got it done and they won their fourth straight game behind a trio of homeruns.  Mike Andrews, Reggis Smith and Tony Conigiliaro all went yard in the game.

Paul Schaal was the hitting star for the Angels.  He went two for four and he drove in one of the three Angels’ runs with a solo homerun.

Lee Stange improved to 3-5 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts in a complete game.  Jack Hamilton took the loss for the Angels and he fell to 1-1.  He gave up three runs in just two innings of work.

Buck Rodgers Powers Angels to Win Over Yankees

Buck Rodgers led the Angels at the plate as they scored two late runs to finish off the Yankees.  He went three for four with a homer and two RBIs.  Jim Fregosi continued to hit the ball well and he went three four with an RBI and two runs.

Bill Kelso picked up the win with three innings of shutout relief.  He gave up four hits but not one of them crossed the plate and he improved to 4-1 on the season.  Minnie Rojas held the Yankees hitless in the final two frames and he picked up save number 12.

Clyde Wright Is Hit Hard In Angels Loss

Clyde Wright had a tough against the Yankees and he dropped to 2-2 with a pretty poor start in the Angels loss.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout in four innings of work.

Jim Fregosi singled twice and he scored two runs.  Don Mincher and Buck Rodgers both singled twice and drove in a run.
