Tony Conigliario Powers Red Sox to Win Over Athletics

Tony Conigliario belted a huge three run homer in the top of the sixth inning to give the Red Sox the runs they needed in their win over the Athletics.  George Scott belted a solo homerun.

Gary Bell picked up the win with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  John Wyatt threw 1 1/3 perfect innings and he picked up his ninth save of the season.

Dave Boswell Strikes Out Thirteen In Twins Win Over Red Sox

Twins 3 (36-34), Red Sox 2 (36-34)

The Twins won the rubber game in their three game series with the Red Sox behind a strong outing by Dave Boswell.  He improved to 5-5 and he gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with thirteen strikeouts in the complete game.  Lee Stange took the loss for the Red Sox and he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in seven innings.

The game winning run came in the seventh inning for the Twins.  Cesar Tovar singled home Ted Uhlaender for that game winning run.  Russ Nixon had the other big hit with a two run single in the fourth inning to put the Twins on the board.

The Red Sox scored both of their runs on solo homeruns.  Jerry Adair and Reggie Smith both went yard for the Red Sox in the game.

Gary Waslewski Pitches Red Sox to Win Over Twins

Red Sox 3 (36-33), Twins 2 (35-34)

Gary Waslewski, with three innings from John Wyatt, was just a little bit better then Dean Chance in the Red Sox win over the Twins.  Waslewski gave up one run on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings and Wyatt gave up one run in three innings of relief to pick up his eighth save.  Dean Chance dropped to 10-6 on the season and he gave up three runs on ten hits with four strikeouts in eight innings.

The big hit of the  game was a two run homer by Tony Conigliaro in the first inning that gave the Red Sox the lead early.  Tony C. was also the only Red Sox hitter with two hits in the game.  Tony Oliva did the damage for the Twins.  He went two for four with a solo homerun and two RBIs in the loss.

Jim Kaat Outduels Jim Lonborg In Twins Win Over Red Sox

The Twins tied the Red Sox in American League standings as Jim Kaat was just a little bit better then Jim Lonborg in a 2-1 pitcher’s duel.  Kaat gave up one run on six hits with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings and the win improves his record to 5-8 on the season.  Lonborg dropped to 9-3 and he gave up two runs on six hits and four walks with ten strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Twins scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.  Tony Oliva led off with a double and then he scored on Zoilo Versalles’ single.  Then Versalles scored on Ted Uhlaender’s triple.

The Red Sox lone run came in the very first inning.  George Scott singled home Mike Andrews and those two players accounted for five of the Red Sox eight hits in the game.

Joe Foy Scores Three Runs In Red Sox Win

Joe Foy continued his hot June with a great game in the Red Sox win over the Indians.  He went three for four with a homerun, two RBIs and three runs.  Carl Yastrzemski belted his eighteenth homerun in the third inning with a two run shot.

Gary Bell picked up the win and he improved to 5-6 on the season.  He gave up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Red Sox Come Back Falls Short In Loss to Indians

Tony Conigliario singled home Mike Andrews in the bottom of the ninth but Tony C. was stranded at first as the Red Sox comeback attempt fell short in a 3-2 loss to the Indians.  Conigliario finished the game with two hits and he drove in both Red Sox runs. 

Bucky Brandon was hit hard and he didn’t even last through the fourth.  He gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Joe Foy Triples Twice In Red Sox Win Over Indians

Joe Foy led the way at the plate for the Red Sox in their 8-4 win over the Indians.  He went four for five with two triples, three runs and an RBI.  Tony Conigiliaro belted his eighth homerun and he went two for three with two RBI and two runs.

Lee Stange picked up the win with a decent enough start.  He gave up four runs on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts in the complete game.

Tony Conigliaro Drives In Four Runs In Red Sox Win

The Red Sox blew out the Yankees for the second straight game and it was mostly Tony Conigiliaro and Carl Yastrzemski who did the damage at the plate.  Tony C. went three for four with a homerun and four RBIs.  Yaz went three for four with three RBIs and a run.

Jim Lonborg improved to 9-2 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up one unearned run on seven hits and six walks with seven strikeouts in a complete game.

Gary Bell Holds Yankees to Five Hits In Red Sox Win

Gary Bell improved to 4-6 on the season with a really nice start against the Yankees.  He gave up just one run on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in a complete game.  It was Bell’s third complete game in four starts since joining the Red Sox.

Joe Foy had the big hit of the game.  His grand slam in the fifth inning not only put the Red Sox on the board but it opened the game up all at once.  Carl Yastrzemski followed Foy with a solo homerun for back to back dingers in the fifth.  It was Yaz’s 17th homerun of the season.

Carl Yastrzemski Hits Homerun Number Sixteen In Red Sox Loss

Carl Yastrzemski hit a two run homerun in the top of the ninth to tie the Red Sox’ game up and send it into extra frames but unfortunately, the bullpen lost it in extra innings.  Jose Santiago was tagged for a run in the bottom of the tenth and he took the loss as the Red Sox dropped their three game series to the Senators 1-3.

A pretty good start by Lee Stange went to waste in the loss. He gave up two runs on seven his and a walk with three strikeouts in eight solid innings.

Jim Lonborg Throws Five Hitter In Red Sox Win

Jim Lonborg improved to 8-2 on the season with another nice start.  This time he held the Senators to just a single run on five hits with two walk with six strikeouts.

Carl Yastrzemski doubled and drove in two runs in the win.  Joe Foy had two more hits and he extended his hitting streak to seven games (15 out of his last 16 games he had a hit as well).  Tony Conigiliaro hit his sixth homerun of the season.

Red Sox Lose Two to Senators

Playing two double headers in three games will have it’s effect on a team and the Red Sox had the misfortune of having to do just that.  The first game saw the Red Sox lose 1-0 despite a fantastic start by Gary Bell.  He fell to 3-6 on the season and he gave up one run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts in seven solid innings.

Carl Yastrzemski had three hits in the loss but those were mostly negated when he was caught stealing twice.  In all, the Red Sox had almost twice as many hits as the Senators (9-5) but they still couldn’t push a single base runner across the plate.

The Red Sox took a 3-0 lead into bottom of the ninth only to see the second game of their doubleheader with the Senators disintegrate before their eyes.  Bucky Brandon, who was in line for a shutout, gave up three runs as the Senators tied it and then John Wyatt gave up the losing run as the Senators came back to beat the Red Sox 4-3.

Tony Conigiliaro had a nice day at the plate in the loss.  He went two for three with a triple and two RBIs.

White Sox Edge Red Sox In Eleven Inning Pitchers Duel

The Red Sox and White Sox played ten innings of shutout ball in their series finale before either team scored a run.  Then the White Sox drew first blood when Ken Berry singled home Walt Williams in the top of the eleventh before the Red Sox rallied for two in the bottom of the inning off of Tony Conigiliaro’s two run walk off homer to end the game.

Both team got great starts from their pitchers.  Gary Waslewski threw nine shutout innings and Bruce Howard threw seven in the pitcher’s duel.  John Wyatt picked up the win despite giving up the go ahead run to the White Sox and John Buzhard took gave up the two run shot to Conigiliaro.

Red Sox and White Sox Split Doubleheader

White Sox 8 (33-21), Red Sox 7 (28-28)

The Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but that wasn’t enough to come back and beat the White Sox in an 8-7 loss.  Walt Williams had a nice day at the plate in the White Sox win.  He went two for four with a three run homer.  Dick Kenworthy went three for four with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs. 

George Scott and Tony Conigiliaro went yard for the Red Sox.  Joe Foy was the only Red Sox hitter with two hits and he also scored a run.

Ken Peters picked up the win although he was far from solid in 5 2/3 innings.  He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 8-3.  Dennis Bennett took the loss for the Red Sox.  He gave up six runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings and he fell to 4-3 on the season.

Red Sox 6 (29-28), White Sox 1 (33-22)

Lee Stange threw seven solid innings and he picked up his first win of the season in the Red Sox win in the second game of their doubleheader against the White Sox.  He gave up one run on five hits and he struck out six in seven solid innings.  Fred Klages made his season debut and he took the loss with a decent start.  He gave up two runs on six hits and one walk with one strikeout in five innings.

George Scott went three for four and he hit a solo homerun for the Red Sox.  Ken Berry went two for four with a double, a triple and a run for the White Sox.

Jim Lornborg Loses Second Start

Jim Lonborg gave the Red Sox eight innings but he gave up five runs and fell to 7-2 on the season with a rough start.  The Yankees tagged him for 12 hits and he gave up two walks with eight strikeouts.

Tony Conigiliaro went two for four with a solo homerun.  Joe Foy continued his hot hitting and he belted his eighth homerun of the season.

Gary Bell Pitches Red Sox To Win Over Yankees

Gary Bell made his second start in a Red Sox uniform and he improved to 2-0 since joining the Red Sox with another nice start.  He gave up just one run on seven hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in his second straight complete game.

George Scott went two for three with an RBI.  Russ Gibson hit a two run homer and that the first homerun of his majro league career.

Red Sox Split Double Header With Senators

Joe Foy and George Scott provided the bulk of the offense in the Red Sox win over the Senators in the first game of their doubleheader.  Scott went three for four with two doubles and he scored a run.  Foy went two for four with a double, two RBIs and a run.

Bucky Brandon left after five innings down 3-0 but the pen and the hitters picked him up.  Jose Santiago picked up the win with three shutout innings and John Wyatt threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his seventh save.

The Red Sox didn’t get much quality piching in a tough loss in the second game of their doubleheader with the Senators.  Gary Waslewski walked five and gave up four runs (only one earned) in three innings and Dan Osinski took the loss when he gave up three runs in two innings.

Joe Foy had four hits and he scored three runs in the loss.  George Scott and Tony Conigliaro each hit a homerun and Conigliaro finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Lee Stange Is Hit Hard In Red Sox Loss

Lee Stange was shelled and he dropped to 0-4 on the season with a rough start.  He gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings.  The pen did a nice job in this one though.  Dan Osinski gave up a single run in his two innings but Bill Landis threw two shutout innings.

George Scott hit a two run homer in the loss.  It was his tenth of the season.  Rico Petrocelli went two for four and he belted his seventh homerun of the season.

Carl Yastrzemski, Joe Foy Homer Twice In Red Sox Win

Both Carl Yastrzemski and Joe Foy went yard twice in a the high scoring 8-7 Red Sox win.  Yaz drove in three runs while both of Foy’s long balls were solo shots.  Reggie Smith went one for five with an RBI and two runs.

Jim Lonborg was roughed up for six runs in five innings but for once, it was the hitters who bailed him out instead of vice versa.  Jose Santiago picked up the win and he improved to 3-2 on the season.  He gave up one run on three hits in three innings.

Red Sox Split Doubleheader With White Sox

The Red Sox lost their third straight game in the first game of a doubleheader with the White Sox.  Joe Horlen was the star of the game and he improved to 7-0 on the season with a nice start for the White Sox.  He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete game.  Dennis Bennett took the loss for the Red Sox.  He fell to 4-2 on the season and he gave up five runs on ten hits and two walks with two strikeouts in eight innings.

Tommie Agee went three for four with two doubles and an RBI in the White Sox win.  Ken Berry hit a two run homer and Jerry McNerty went two for three with a solo homerun and two runs scored.

For the Red Sox, Joe Foy hit a solo homerun.  Carl Yastrzemski went two for four with an RBI.

Carl Yastrzemski led the way at the plate for the Red Sox as the snapped their three game losing streak in the second game of their doubleheader with the White Sox.  He went four for five with his twelth homerun and two RBIs.  Joe Foy went two for five with a double, a run and two RBIs.

Gary Bell improved to 2-5 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a complete game.  Bruce Howard took the loss and he was hit hard early. He gave up five runs and he didn’t even make it through the second inning.

Tommy McCraw was the hitting star for the White Sox in their loss.  He went one for four but he drove in two of the White Sox three runs.

Bucky Brandon Is Hit Hard in Red Sox Loss to White Sox

White Sox 5 (27-18), Red Sox 3 (24-23)

The White Sox knocked Bucky Brandon around and despite the Red Sox outhitting the Red Sox 10-8, the White Sox got it done where it mattered and walked away with a 5-3 win.  Brandon gave up five runs on seven his and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings and the loss dropped him to 2-6 on the season.  For the White Sox, Hoyt Wilhelm picked up the win with some solid relief pitching.  He didn’t allow a run in his 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Tommie Agee singled and drove in two runs for the White Sox.  J.C. Marin also had a nice game and he went two for two with a run.  For the Red Sox, Mike Ryan went two for three with an RBI while Mike Andrews went two for four with a run.

Red Sox Held to Five Hits In Shutout Loss to Indians

The Indians got another nice start from their pitcher but the problem was that they didn’t score a single run.  George Scott was the only Red Sox with two hits and Carl Yastrzesmki was the only Red Sox hitter with an extra base with a double.

Lee Stange dropped to 0-3 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in seven innings.

Dennis Bennett Pitches Red Sox to Win Over Indians

The Red Sox got another nice outing from their starter in their second straight win.  This time it was Dennis Bennett who pitched the Red Sox to the win.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in six innings.  Jose Santiago was very impressive and he threw three perfect innings to close out the game and he picked up his first save of the season.

George Scott went yard and he both scored two and drove in two.  The homerun was his fourth of the season.

Jim Lonborg Shuts Down Indians In Red Sox Win

Jim Lonborg continued his great start to the season with a three hit complete game against the Indians.  The win pushed his record to 7-1 on the season and he gave up just one run on the three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Carl Yastrzemski provided all the offense for the Red Sox.  He hit a two run homer in the sixth inning and that was his eleventh homer of the season.

Dean Chance Throws Five Hit Shutout In Twins Win Over Red Sox

Twins 4 (21-22), Red Sox 0 (22-21)

Dean Chance improved to 9-2 with another incredible start for the Twins.  It was his second straight shutout and in this one he gave up only five hits and two walks while he struck out ten.  For the Red Sox, Billy Rohr was once again hit hard and he dropped to 2-3 on the season.  He gave up three runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings.  This would be Rohr’s eighth start of the season and his career, but it would also be his last. He’d take some time off to serve in the armed forces reserves and then he’d be sent back down to the minors.  He’d then be traded to the Indians in 1968 where he’d throw in just 18 1/3 innings before his major league career ended.

Russ Nixon led the way at the plate for the Twins.  He went one for two with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.  Bob Allison also went yard for the Twins and he finished with two runs.  Mike Andrews was the only Red Sox hitter with two hits.  Rico Petrocelli had the only extra base hit with a double.
