Tigers Split Doubleheader With White Sox

White Sox 4 (57-41), Tigers 1 (52-45)

Joe Horlen improved to 13-3 with a four hit outing against the Tigers in the first game of a double header with the White Sox.  Horlen walked four and struck out one.  Denny McLain didn’t fare nearly as well for the Tigers.  He gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in only two innings of work.  He dropped to 12-12 on the season.

Walt Williams and Pete Ward had solid games for the White Sox.  Williams had two hits and run and two RBIs while Ward drove in two with a double.  J.C. Martin had three singles and a run to help out the cause for the White Sox. 

Dick McAuliffe drove in the only run for the Tigers.  Lenny Green had two hits in the game.

Tigers 7 (53-45), White Sox 1 (57-42)

The Tigers salvaged a split of both their doubleheader and their four game series with the White Sox.  Johnny Podres was very effective on the mound for the Tigers.  He gave up only a single run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Mike Marshall threw two no hit innings to close out the game and he saved his tenth of the season.

Bruce Howard was knocked around for the White Sox and he fell to 3-8.  He gave up five runs on five hits in three innings.  Each of the two White Sox relievers left the game with a run to their credit as well.

Willie Horton had a big three run homerun in the third that capped off a five run inning.  Al Kaline had two hits in a run and was the only Tiger with more then one hit.

The run for the White Sox came by the long ball.  Duane Josephson hit a solo homerun in the seventh to break up a shutout by Podres.

White Sox Stay In First, Snap Tigers Three Game Winning Streak

White Sox 4 (56-41), Tigers 3 (52-44)

The White Sox snapped the Tigers three game winning streak heading into a big Sunday double header between the two teams.  The White Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the fourth inning and while the Tigers picked at the lead and eventually made it a one run game in the ninth, the Tigers fell just short.  Oddly, the Tigers outhit the White Sox 14-5 yet still lost 4-3.

Wilbur Wood picked up the win and he improved to 3-0.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.  Hoyt Wilhelm had mixed results.  He gave up just as many hits (7) as he had outs in 2 1/3 innings but only gave up three runs.  He struck out three.  Don McMahon threw a perfect ninth and he picked up his third save of the season.

Joe Sparma was knocked around and gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in only four innnings.  The pen pitched solid and three reliever combined for four innings of one hit ball, but the Tigers couldn’t get runners across the plate to complete a come back.

Ken Boyer had a big two run homerun that set the stage for the White Sox in the first inning.  Ron Hansen doubled twice and drove in a run.  Bill Freehan and Mickey Stanley both had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers while Al Kaline singled three times and scored a run in his second game back from the broken hand.

Tigers Move Up the Standings With Win Over White Sox

Tigers 7 (52-43), White Sox 4 (55-41)

Earl Wilson held the White Sox to four hits and the Tigers took advantage of four White Sox errors to win their third game in a row.  Wilson pitched seven inning and gave up three of the White Sox runs.  He improved to 13-8.  Mike Marshall pitched the final two frames and picked up his ninth save of the season.

Gary Peters took the loss for the White Sox.  He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk.  Bob Locker was shelled for three runs in one inning or relief.

Norm Cash homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers while Mickey Stanley had two hits and three runs.  Walt Williams and J.C. Martin homered for the White Sox to account for most of the Sox offense.

Denny McLain Throws Seven Hit Shutout In Win Over Orioles

The Tigers picked up right where they left off after a three day lay off.  Denny McLain threw a seven hit shutout to lead the way for the Tigers.  He struck out four and didn’t yield a walk.

Dick McAuliffe hit homerun number 19 and he finished with two RBIs.  Don Wert doubled twice and scored a run while Oyler had two singles, a run and an RBI.

Tigers Split Doubleheader With Yankees

Yankees 4, Tigers 2  (49-43)

The Tigers couldn’t get the bats going in the first game of their doubleheader with the Yankees.  The Tigers managed only two runs on six hits.  Dick McAuliffe hit a solo homerun and he was the only Tiger with two hits.

Mickey Lolich dropped to 5-12.  He gave up three runs on nine hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in eight innings of work.

July 23, 1967 at Yankee Stadium
Tigers 7, Yankees 3  (50-43)

The Tigers finished up their series with the Yankees with a win and won their 50th game of the season in the process.  The big inning for the Tigers was the fourth inning, in which they scored four runs.

Johnny Podres was pulled in the fourth inning and it was John Hiller who ended up with the win.  Mike Marshall pitched three shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his eighth save of the season.

John Hiller also helped out his own cause with a two run single in the fourth.  Jim Landis and Willie Horton both hit homeruns.

Ths game also marked the beginning of the Detroit riots.  During the game, plumes of smoke could be seen and the Tigers would have a few of their games postponed as the city faced one of it’s darkest hours.

Tigers Blowout Yankees For Third Straight Win

Tigers 11, Yankees 4  (49-42)

The Tigers turned on the offense to beat the Yankees in their third straight win.  Norm Cash had a huge game.  He went four for five with his twelth homerun.  He drove in five runs and scored three times.  Willie Horton hit a three run homerun and Dick McAuliffe and Don Wert scored twice.

Earl Wilson coasted to an easy win.  He improved to 12-8 and he gave up three runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.  Mike Marshall pitched the final three frames and he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Tigers Top Yankees With Fifteen Hits

Tigers 4, Yankees 2  (48-42)

The Tigers topped the Yankees and won for the third time in four games with a solid outing by Denny McLain.  He improved to 11-11 and he gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Mike Marshall continued to work effectively as the teams closer and he picked up his sixth save with two innings of scoreless relief.

Willie Horton had three hits, a run and two RBIs to lead the way for the Tigers.  Don Wert went three for five with a run and Bill Freehan had two hits, a run and RBI.  Oddly, the Tigers had fifteen hits in the game and fourteen of them were singles.

Dick McAuliffe Hits Tigers to Win Over Senators

The Tigers won their first series since the All Star break as they doubled up the Senators.  Dick McAuliffe led the way with the bat.  He doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs.  Mickey Stanley also had a good game.  He went three for four with an RBI.

Joe Sparma picked up his tenth win of the season.  He gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Mike Marshall closed the game out with two strikeouts and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

Senators Score Two In The Ninth to Beat Tigers

The Tigers winning ways were short lived as Phil Ortega and Darold Knowles held the Tigers in check.  Don Wert hit a solo homerun for the Tigers and Jim Northrup singled and drove in a run but two runs wasn’t going to cut it in this game.

Mickey Lolich gave up two runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Fred Gladding ended up taking the loss when he gave up two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie.

Tigers End Skid With Win Over Senators

The Tigers were glad to get home as they finally ended their seven game losing streak.  Earl Wilson picked up the win with a complete game.  He improved to 11-8 and he gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

Dick McAuliffe tripled and scored two runs.  Wilson helped out his own cause with two singles and two RBIs.

Red Sox Blowout Tigers

The Red Sox continued to take advantage of the struggling Tigers as Detroit lost their seventh straight game after having a seven game winning streak.  Lee Stange held the Tigers in check while Denny McLain was knocked around for five runs in six innings.

Carl Yastrzemski hit homerun number 22 and he drove in three runs.  Joe Foy had three hits and three runs while Mike Andrews singled twice and scored twice. 

The only run for the Tigers came on Don Wert’s RBI single in the fifth inning.  No Tiger reached base more the once.

Red Sox Hand Tigers Sixth Straight Loss In Blowout

Red Sox 9 (45-40), Tigers 5  (45-40)

The Tigers lost their sixth straight game, this time at the hands of the Boston Red Sox.  A five run third inning wasn’t enough for Boston as they piled on three more runs in the fourth to make for a wicked blowout.

Tony Conigliaro hit a three run shot and Carl Yastrzemski hit a two run homerun to power the Red Sox to the win.  Reggie Smith finished with three hits and two runs while Mike Ryan and Bucky Brandon both scored twice.

Willie Horton and Mickey Stanley homered for the Tigers.  Jim Northrup singled, drew a walk and scored twice in the loss.

Brandon picked up the win despite going only 5 1/3 innings.  He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  Joe Sparma dropped to 9-3 for the Tigers and he gave up five runs on four hits with two strikeouts in only three innings of work.

Tigers Lose Fifth Straight Game

The Tigers blew a two run lead and in the process lost their fifth straight game.  Mickey Lolich had thrown six scoreless innings but he gave up three runs in the seventh to lose. He dropped to 5-11 and he struck out nine in the start.

Roy Oyler tripled in a run and then later scored to account for the Tigers offens.  Bill Freehan singled twice and drew a walk to reach base three times in the game.

Tigers Lose Fourth Straight Game

The Tigers post All Star break struggles continued as the Senators handed the Tigers their fourth straight loss.  Earl Wilson was cruising along in this one but he gave up two runs in the bottom of the eighth to break a 1-1 tie that ended up being the difference.

Wilson dropped to 10-8 and he gave up three runs on four hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Bill Freehan drove in the only Tiger run with a solo shot in the seventh inning.

Tigers Lose Two To Senators

The Senators handed the Tigers the first game of a double header just after the All Star break.  Joe Sparma was crushed for five runs on eight hits and a walk in only 3 2/3 innings.  He dropped to 9-2 on the season.

Norm Cash hit homerun number 11 for the Tigers.  Don Wert doubled and scored a run.

Senators 6, Tigers 1  (45-37)

The Tigers lost their third straight game and they were swept in their double header with the Senators.  Denny McLain was bounced around early and he left after six innings in which he gave up six runs.  The loss evened his record at 10-10.

Jim Northrup had two hits and his RBI single that drove in Norm Cash was the only run of the game for the Tigers.

Tigers and Red Sox Split Doubleheader

Tigers 10 (45-34), Red Sox 4 (40-39)

The Tigers blew out the Red Sox in the opener of Sunday doubleheader to win their seventh straight game.  Dick McAuliffe and Earl Wilson homered for the Tigers in the ten run onslaught.  McAuliffe finished with three runs and Jim Northrup drove in two and scored twice.

Carl Yastrzemski tagged Earl Wilson for three of the eight Red Sox hits. He scored twice and drove in one.   Gary Bell took the loss and he was gone before the end of the third.  Jose Santiago didn’t fare much better and the Tigers had nine runs on the board by the end of the fourth inning.

Wilson picked up the win and he improved to 10-7.  He gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.  Mike Marhsall picked up his fourth save with 1 1/3 perfect innings.

July 9, 1967 at Tiger Stadium
Red Sox 3 (41-39), Tigers 0  (45-35)

The Red Sox ended the Tigers seven game winning and avoided a four game sweep behind a combined four hit shutout by Jim Lornborg and John Wyatt.  The Red Sox scored two runs in the second inning and that was all they’d need to win this one.

Reggie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski accounted for all three Red Sox runs with homeruns.  Smith hit a two run shot in the second while Yaz hit a solo shot in the eighth.  Lonborg improved to an impressive 11-3 while Wyatt picked up his 11th save of the season.

Jerry Lumpe singled twice and he was the only Tiger to reach base more then once.  Dave Wickersham took the loss and dropped to 4-2 after going just two innings.

Denny McLain Shuts Out Red Sox For Tigers Sixth Straight Win

The Tigers won their sixth straight game behind a four hit shutout by Denny McLain.  Denny walked four and struck out two and he improved to 10-9 on the season.

Lee Stange took the loss for the Red Sox despite pitching a solid game.  Carl Yastrzemski was the only guy who got to McLain twice in the game.

Lenny Green went three for four with an RBI and a run for the Tigers.  Norm Cash drove in the other run.

Tigers Edge Red Sox in Eleven Innings For Fifth Straight Win

The Tigers blew a big lead in the ninth inning to the Red Sox but held on to win the game in extra frames for their fifth straight win.  The Tigers got off to a nice start in the first inning on RBI singles by Jerry Lumpe and Norm Cash and the Red Sox didn’t answer until the top of the seventh on Rico Petrocelli’s sac. fly to make it 2-1.  The Tigers put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh on Cash’s two run shot and the game went into the ninth inning with the Tigers up by three runs.

Joe Sparma got the first two batters out in the top of the ninth but then gave up a solo shot to Conigliaro.  George Scott and Petrocelli hit back to back singles and Mayo Smith went to the pen and brought in Mike Marshall.  Marshall couldn’t stop the damage though and a one run single by Reggie Smith and a one run double by Jerry Adair tied the game up at 4-4.

Neither team scored in the tenth and the Marshall held the Red Sox scoreless in the top of the eleventh.  In the bottom of the eleventh, Norm Cash grounded out to start the inning before Jim Northrup singled.  Then Bill Freehan came up huge with a walk off RBI double to end the game.

Sparma pitched 8 2/3 innings while Marshall picked up his first win of the season with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief (the runners he let come home were Sparma’s).  Gary Waslewski started for the Red Sox and he was gone after two innings.  John Wyatt picked up the loss and he dropped to 4-4.

Twins Blow Out Yankees For Eighth Straight Win

The Twins fantastic run continued with their eighth straight win and a four game series sweep over the Yankees.  Rich Reese homered and drove in four runs while Ted Uhlaender went two for four with a homerun and three RBIs to lead the way for the Twins.

Jim Kaat picked up the win and he improved to 7-8.  He gave up four runs on twelve hits and one walk with six strikeouts in a complete game.

Squeeze Play Pushes Tigers to Fourth Straight Win

The Tigers came from behind to win their fourth straight game.  Down 2-0, Dick McAuliffe drove home Roy Oyler in the fifth inning to cut the lead in half.  Then in the eighth inning, Mickey Stanley’s triple drove in Norm Cash to tie the game and Roy Oyler’s sac. bunt drove home Stanley to give the Tigers the lead.

Johnny Podres got the start but he left after four innings of work.  Fred Gladding picked up the win and he improved to 3-3 while Mike Marshall picked up his third save of the season.

Tigers Give Earl Wilson Early Lead In Tigers Third Straight Win

The Tigers took care of the Indians for their third straight win.  A five run first inning and a great outing by Earl Wilson were the keys to the game.

Bill Freehan’s two run homerun capped off the five run first inning for the Tigers.  Dick McAuliffe also homered and he scored two runs.

Wilson improved to 9-7 with the two hitter.  He gave up a single run on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Denny McLain Gives Up Just Three Hits in Solid Outing

Tigers 2 (40-34), Indians 1

Denny McLain outdueled Luis Tiant in a great pitchers duel.  Each starter gave up only three hits and each gave up a homerun but the homerun by Jerry Lumpe in the top of the third came with McLain on base while Lee Maye’s homerun was only a solo shot.

McLain gave up the one run on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.  Tiant struck out ten Tigers in eight innings.

Joe Sparma Throws Six Hit Shutout In Tigers Win Over White Sox

The Tigers were outhit 6-3 but they made their hits count as Joe Sparma shut out the White Sox.  Sparma improved to 9-1 on the season and he gave up the six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in the complete game shutout.

Gary Peters was nearly as good as Sparma and gave up only three hits with eleven strikeouts, but two of those three hits were homeruns.  Mickey Stanley hit a two run shot in the second inning and Bill Freehan homered in the sixth to account for the three Tiger runs.

J.C. Martin seemed to be the only guy who could figure out Sparma. He was three for three and he stole a base.

White Sox Edge Tigers to Even Series

White Sox 6 (43-28), Tigers 5  (38-34)

The Tigers tried to come back from a five run deficit but fell one run short in a loss to the White Sox as they lost the game they picked up yeterday.  Joe Horlen won his tenth game of the season and gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Hoyt Wilhelm picked up his seventh save by closing the door on the Tigers in the final 2 1/3 innings.

Dave Wickersham took the loss for the Tigers.  He gave up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work.  Pat Dobson was touched up for two runs while Fred Gladding closed the game out with two scoreless innings.

Tommy McCraw and Ron Hansen homered for the White Sox.  McCraw drove in two runs and scored twice while Hansen was a perfect three for three with three RBIs.  For the Tigers, Dick McAuliffe hit homerun and drove in two while Lenny Green singled twice and had two RBIs.
