Johnny Podres Pitches Tigers to Win Over White Sox

Tigers 4 (38-33), White Sox 1 (42-28)

Johnny Podres improved to 2-0 on the season with a strong outing over the first place Chicago White Sox.  He gave up a single run on eight hits with two strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of work.  Mike Marshall closed out the game and he picked up his second save of the season.

Tommy John took the loss for the White Sox.  He gave up four runs on four hits and four walks in four innings.  Three relievers combined to shut the Tigers out in the final four frames but the White Sox couldn’t get the bats going to mount a come back. 

Norm Cash drove in two runs for the Tigers and all four runs were scored by different players.  For the White Sox, Tommie Agee singled home Don Buford in the eighth inning to account for the only White Sox run.

White Sox Held to Three Hits In Loss to Orioles

Orioles 4, White Sox 1  (42-27)

The White Sox had a tough day at the plate in their loss to the Orioles and they pushed just one run across the plate on five hits.  The lone run came on a solo homerun by Ken Berry in the second inning.

Jim O’Toole had a tough loss and he fell to 4-2 on the season.  He gave up three runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in just two innings.

White Sox Win Third Straight With Win Over Orioles

The White Sox won their league leading 42nd game of the season and their third straight in a tight game over the Orioles.  The big hit came off the bat of Wayne Causey.  He picked a good time to hit his homerun because he drove in all three White Sox runs with a three run homer.  Ron Hansen was a perfect three for three in the win.

Bob Locker picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief.  He improved to 3-2 on the season and Hoyt Wilhelm picked up save number six as he got the final two outs for the Sox.

Joe Horlen Throws Five Hit Shutout In White Sox Win

Joe Horlen was money on the mound as he held the Orioles to just five hits in his shutout win.   He gave up two walks and he struck out three and the win pushed his record to 9-1 on the season.

Duane Josephson was the hitting star in the win.  He went three for four with a run and an RBI.  Horlen drove in a run on a sac. fly to help out his own cause.

White Sox Score Five Late Runs to Top Orioles

The White Sox scored five runs in the final three innings to beat the Orioles by a single run.  Neither team had scored through five innings before each team put up a flurry of runs near the end of the game.  The White Sox got the go ahead run in the ninth when Ken Berry singled home Jimmy Stewart and Wayne Causey to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win.  Ironically, all three of those hitters were pinch hitters.

Bob Locker picked up the win despite giving up the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.  He improved to 2-2 on the season.  Hoyt Wilhelm threw a perfect ninth and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

Twins Score Three In The Eighth To Top White Sox

The Twins rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to take the rubber game in their three game series with the White Sox.  The game winning run came on a two run pinch hit triple by Ear Battey.  Cesar Tovar then drove home a third insurance run the inning.

A pretty good start by Tommy John went to waste.  He threw seven shutout innings but then it was the eighth where he had his problems.  He gave up the three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in eight innings and the loss drops him to 6-4 on the season.  Jim Merritt improved to 5-0 with the win.  He gave up one run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Don Buford drove in the only White Sox run of the game.  He went one for four and he had one of only three White Sox hits.

Gary Peters Hits and Pitches His Way to Tenth Win Of the Season

White Sox 5 (39-25), Twins 2 (33-33)

Yesterday it was Dean Chance who pitched the Twins to a win and this time was Gary Peters who pitched the White Sox to one. He improved to 10-3 on the season and he gave up two runs on five hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in the complete game.

Dave Boswell was hit hard and he took the loss for the Twins.  He dropped to 4-5 on the season and he gave up five runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. 

Peters helped out his own cause for the White Sox at the plate.  He went two for four and he drove in two runs.  Ron Hansen went two for four with an RBI and a run.  All five White Sox runs were scored in the seventh inning.  For the Twins, Bob Allison led the way and he went two for four with a solo homerun.

Dean Chance Throws Three Hit Shutout In Twins Win Over White Sox

The Twins edged the first place White Sox and it was Dean Chance who was the big story.  He held the White Sox to three hits in a shutout win, his tenth of the season.  A solid start by Joe Horlen went to waste and he took the loss.  He dropped his first start of the season and fell to 8-1 and he gave up one run on six hits with two strikeouts in seven innings.

The lone run of the game on either side came on a solo homerun by Harmon Killebrew. It was his 22nd homerun of the season.  Bob Allison and Jerry Zimmerman both went two for three for the Twins.

The White Sox managed just the three hits and a walk and nobody reached base more then once.  Tommie Agee had the only extra base hit with a double.

White Sox Sweep Doubleheader Over Senators

The White Sox got a great game from Jerry McNertney in the first game of their doubleheader with the Senators. He went three for four and he played a part in three of the White Sox five runs with two RBIs and a run.

Bruce Howard improved to 3-5 with 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief.  He gave up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.  Hoyt Wilhelm threw three scoreless innings to close the game out and he picked up save number four.

Jim O’Toole gave the White Sox seven quality innings as the team finished their doubleheader sweep over the Senators.  O’Toole improved to 3-1 on the season and he gave up just one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Bob Locker picked up save number ten as he pitched two scoreless innings to close the game out.

Tommy McCraw hit a solo homerun that turned out to be the winning run for the Sox.  Tommie Agee went two for four with a double and he scored the other run.

Bruce Howard Is Hit Hard In White Sox Loss

The White Sox three game winning streak came to an end as the White Sox were doubled up by the Senators.  Bruce Howard took the loss and he gave up two runs on four hits and he didn’t even make it out of the second inning.

Jerry McNerty went two for four with an RBI.  Tommy McCraw hit a solo homerun in the loss.

White Sox Sweep Doubleheader Over Yankees

The White Sox won their second straight game in the front end of their doubleheader with the Yankees.  Ken Berry and Ron Hansen each had two hits, two RBIs and a run while Jim King drove in two with a pinch hit single.

Gary Peters improved to 9-3 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts in a complete game.

The White Sox won their third straight game behind an outstanding outing by Tommy John.  He improved to 6-3 with a six hit shutout with one walk and five strikeouts.

Pete Ward hit a pinch hit solo homerun.  Don Buford singled, drew a walk, scored a run and drove in one in the win.

Joe Horlen improved to 8-0 on the season with a nice start in the White Sox 1-0 pitcher’s duel against the Yankees.  He gave up just four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Walt Williams had two hits and he also drove in the only run of the game for either side in the eighth inning.  Al Weis singled and scored a run.

White Sox Edge Red Sox In Eleven Inning Pitchers Duel

The Red Sox and White Sox played ten innings of shutout ball in their series finale before either team scored a run.  Then the White Sox drew first blood when Ken Berry singled home Walt Williams in the top of the eleventh before the Red Sox rallied for two in the bottom of the inning off of Tony Conigiliaro’s two run walk off homer to end the game.

Both team got great starts from their pitchers.  Gary Waslewski threw nine shutout innings and Bruce Howard threw seven in the pitcher’s duel.  John Wyatt picked up the win despite giving up the go ahead run to the White Sox and John Buzhard took gave up the two run shot to Conigiliaro.

Red Sox and White Sox Split Doubleheader

White Sox 8 (33-21), Red Sox 7 (28-28)

The Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth but that wasn’t enough to come back and beat the White Sox in an 8-7 loss.  Walt Williams had a nice day at the plate in the White Sox win.  He went two for four with a three run homer.  Dick Kenworthy went three for four with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs. 

George Scott and Tony Conigiliaro went yard for the Red Sox.  Joe Foy was the only Red Sox hitter with two hits and he also scored a run.

Ken Peters picked up the win although he was far from solid in 5 2/3 innings.  He gave up five runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts and the win pushed his record to 8-3.  Dennis Bennett took the loss for the Red Sox.  He gave up six runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings and he fell to 4-3 on the season.

Red Sox 6 (29-28), White Sox 1 (33-22)

Lee Stange threw seven solid innings and he picked up his first win of the season in the Red Sox win in the second game of their doubleheader against the White Sox.  He gave up one run on five hits and he struck out six in seven solid innings.  Fred Klages made his season debut and he took the loss with a decent start.  He gave up two runs on six hits and one walk with one strikeout in five innings.

George Scott went three for four and he hit a solo homerun for the Red Sox.  Ken Berry went two for four with a double, a triple and a run for the White Sox.

Tommy John Strikes Out Nine In Three Hit Shutout

Tommy John improved to 5-3 on the season with a fantastic outing in the White Sox win.  He gave up just three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in a complete game shutout.

Ron Hansen had the big hit of the game.  His three run homer in the sixth inning really opened this game up.  Don Buford singled twice and he scored two runs.

White Sox Lose to Senators In Twenty Two Innings

This was a crazy game that clocked in at six hours and thirty eight minutes.  The White Sox came back from a 4-1 deficit and tied it with three runs in the seventh.  The game went into extra frames and each team scored in the tenth to keep it going.  Then neither team scored over the next eleven innings until the Senators tagged John Buzhardt in the twenty second inning for a run in his eighth inning of work.

Walt Williams logged ten at bats and he went two for ten in the game.  Ron Hansen went three for eight with two RBIs while Don Buford went three for nine with an RBI.

White Sox Sweep Doubleheader Over Yankees

Jim O’Toole gave the White Sox five nice innings and Hoyt Wilhelm shut down the Yankees after that as the White Sox edged the Yankees.  O’Toole gave up one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts while Hoyt Wilhelm held the Yankees scoreless through 3 2/3 innings.

Don Buford went three for five with an RBI and a stolen base.  J.C. Martin also had a nice game and he went two for five with with a stolen base and a run.

White Sox 3 (31-20), Yankees 2

The White Sox made it three straight wins as they finished a sweep of their doubleheader over the Yankees.  Bruce Howard threw eight shutout innings before he got into trouble in the ninth and was tagged for two runs.  The pen bailed him out though and Bob Locker got the final batter out to pick up his ninth save. 

The White Sox scored all of their runs with one swing of the bat.  Jerry McNerty hit a three run homer in the top of the fourth inning and that was all the White Sox needed to win.  It was his second homerun of the season.

Gary Peters Throws Four Hit Shutout in White Sox Win

The White Sox turned the table on the Yankees and they dominated on both sides.  They racked up nine runs with the stick and Gary Peters threw an impressive four hit shutout.  He walked three and he finished with nine strikeouts in the win.

Strangely, all nine runs were scored by different White Sox.  Pete Ward went three for three with a run and an RBI  and Ed Stroud went three for five with two RBIs and a run.

White Sox Lose Ten Inning Pitcher’s Duel to Yankees

A very nice start by Tommy John went to waste in a ten inning loss to the Yankees.  John gave up just one run on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in seven innings.  Bob Locker gave up the losing run in the bottom of the tenth and he fell to 1-2 on the season.

Pitching wasn’t the problem though, it was the hitting.  Ken Berry went two for four and he drove in the only run.  Walt Williams went three for five and Tommy McCraw went two for four and he scored the only run.

Red Sox Split Doubleheader With White Sox

The Red Sox lost their third straight game in the first game of a doubleheader with the White Sox.  Joe Horlen was the star of the game and he improved to 7-0 on the season with a nice start for the White Sox.  He gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete game.  Dennis Bennett took the loss for the Red Sox.  He fell to 4-2 on the season and he gave up five runs on ten hits and two walks with two strikeouts in eight innings.

Tommie Agee went three for four with two doubles and an RBI in the White Sox win.  Ken Berry hit a two run homer and Jerry McNerty went two for three with a solo homerun and two runs scored.

For the Red Sox, Joe Foy hit a solo homerun.  Carl Yastrzemski went two for four with an RBI.

Carl Yastrzemski led the way at the plate for the Red Sox as the snapped their three game losing streak in the second game of their doubleheader with the White Sox.  He went four for five with his twelth homerun and two RBIs.  Joe Foy went two for five with a double, a run and two RBIs.

Gary Bell improved to 2-5 on the season with a nice start.  He gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a complete game.  Bruce Howard took the loss and he was hit hard early. He gave up five runs and he didn’t even make it through the second inning.

Tommy McCraw was the hitting star for the White Sox in their loss.  He went one for four but he drove in two of the White Sox three runs.

Bucky Brandon Is Hit Hard in Red Sox Loss to White Sox

White Sox 5 (27-18), Red Sox 3 (24-23)

The White Sox knocked Bucky Brandon around and despite the Red Sox outhitting the Red Sox 10-8, the White Sox got it done where it mattered and walked away with a 5-3 win.  Brandon gave up five runs on seven his and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings and the loss dropped him to 2-6 on the season.  For the White Sox, Hoyt Wilhelm picked up the win with some solid relief pitching.  He didn’t allow a run in his 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Tommie Agee singled and drove in two runs for the White Sox.  J.C. Marin also had a nice game and he went two for two with a run.  For the Red Sox, Mike Ryan went two for three with an RBI while Mike Andrews went two for four with a run.

White Sox Split Doubleheader With Athletics

Tommy John threw a five hit shutout as the White Sox two game mini losing streak came to an end.  He walked one and struck out seven and the win pushed his record to 4-3 on the season.

Ken Berry provided the offense.  He drove in both White Sox runs with a two run single in the fourth inning.  Ed Stroud tripled and scored a run in the win.

John Buzhardt was roughed up in the second game of their doubleheader against the Athletics.  He gave up five runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in just 3 2/3 innings.  The loss drops his record to 2-4 on the season.

Tommie Agee was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for four with a homerun, two RBIs and a stolen base.  Ed Stroud also helped out with two runs.

White Sox Lose to Athletics In Thirteen Innings

Hoyt Wilhelm took his first loss of the season when he gave up three runs to the Athletics in the thirteenth inning.  This was definitely an odd game though.  Each team had scored three runs by the third and then over the next nine inning, neither team scored.  Then both teams combined for four runs in the thirteenth alone with the Athletics coming out on top.

Tommie Agee went two for five with a homerun and two runs.  Tommy McCraw went three for six with a run and an RBI.
