The Tigers couldn’t get the bats going in the first game of their doubleheader with the Yankees.  The Tigers managed only two runs on six hits.  Dick McAuliffe hit a solo homerun and he was the only Tiger with two hits.

Mickey Lolich dropped to 5-12.  He gave up three runs on nine hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in eight innings of work.

The Tigers finished up their series with the Yankees with a win and won their 50th game of the season in the process.  The big inning for the Tigers was the fourth inning, in which they scored four runs.

Johnny Podres was pulled in the fourth inning and it was John Hiller who ended up with the win.  Mike Marshall pitched three shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his eighth save of the season.

John Hiller also helped out his own cause with a two run single in the fourth.  Jim Landis and Willie Horton both hit homeruns.

Ths game also marked the beginning of the Detroit riots.  During the game, plumes of smoke could be seen and the Tigers would have a few of their games postponed as the city faced one of it’s darkest hours.
