Yankees 3, White Sox 2 (75-61)
While you can’t neccesarily say that Al Downing outpitched Gary Peters, the you can say it was Peters who took an unfortunate loss as he fell to 15-9. The White Sox defense made four errors behind him and the net effect of that was that all three of the runs that Peters gave up were unearned. He gave up the three unearned runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings.
The White Sox managed only five singles and a walk. Ken Boyer and Ron Hansen drove in the two runs for the White Sox.

White Sox 3 (76-61), Yankees 2
The White Sox salvaged a split in their doubleheader with the Yankees with some nice pitching by Cisco Carlos and the pen. Carlos gave up one run in 4 2/3 innings while Bob Locker and Hoyt Wilhelm threw two shutout innings of relief a piece. It was Wilhelm who picked up the win and he improved to 8-3.
Duane Josephson singled home Don Buford in the top of the tenth inning to win it for the White Sox. Josephson was also the only White Sox hitter with two hits in the game.
